Nikolay Doubnia has only recently started working at Tres Seis Cinco Publicidad, all the way in Perú, as a photo-manipulator and illustrator, but it's a job he does very well, judging by his portfolio. He already developed his own unique style, as he draws mystifying images in vivid colours, which you can check out on his Behance page.
Could you tell us a bit about yourself? I'm an illustrator from Perú, I'm 18 years old and I'm currently working at an advertising agency. I studied graphic design for a year, but Il earned most by myself.
What is it you enjoy so much about design? I just love it... I love the colours, the shapes, all of those thing that I can do with a sheet of paper and a pencil. I love to create images that no one could ever imagine. There are no words to describe it.
How did you create your own style? I created it by drawing without thinking about other illustrations or designs. That's how you create your own style. You got to live in your own world and find all those hidden creatures nobody else has ever seen before.
Where do your ideas come from? My mind.
How is your process? Do you start on paper? I start by drawing a sketch on paper and then I scan it and later paint it (digitally). Sometimes I design on a computer straight away.
What's the biggest misconception about graphic designers? I don't know. I don't talk about what I do with other people. I just tell them that I'm a guy who likes drawings 'n stuff.
What advice would you give to other students around the world? The best advice I can give is to do what you like to. Don't care what your parents, your friends or your girlfriend say about you. Don't stop and don't give up.
